Get a clean print on Letter or A4

By Room for Puzzles· 4 min read·

A good print starts with matching the page to the paper in your printer. Room for Puzzles offers a layout for US Letter and a separate layout for A4. Choose the size you are actually using before opening the print dialog, then take a moment to check the preview. The same steps also help when you want to save a PDF for later.

Match the paper in both places

Select Letter or A4 in the puzzle tool first. Then open Print and select that same paper size in your browser or printer settings. These are two separate choices: selecting A4 on the website does not mean your printer has switched from Letter automatically.

Use portrait orientation. If you are printing on a shared printer, check the loaded tray or ask the person who manages it. When sending a PDF to someone else, tell them which paper size you used so they can make the same choice at their end.

Keep the scale predictable

Start with 100% scale, also called Actual size in some print dialogs. This preserves the intended page layout. Turn off the browser’s headers and footers so it does not add a date, page address, or title around the puzzle.

Check every page in the preview. The grid and word list should be visible, with no letters cut off at the edges. Printer controls vary, so use the preview as your final check. If something is clipped, first confirm the paper size and orientation, then review the printer’s margin or scaling options before using more paper.

Decide whether to include the answers

The answer sheet is optional and prints on a separate page when included. For a group activity, you may only need one answer copy for the organizer. For an individual puzzle, an answer page can be useful to keep nearby for an occasional hint.

If you want the puzzle and answers on different sheets, turn off two-sided printing. Otherwise, your printer may put the answers on the back of the puzzle. Use the page range in the print dialog if you only want one of the previewed pages.

Use ordinary black-and-white printing

Color is optional. The puzzle uses letters, lines, and word labels, so you can print in black and white. There is no need to turn on background graphics just to make the puzzle usable.

Before printing a whole set, make one sample. Check that the lettering looks clear on your particular printer, the lightest lines are still visible, and there is comfortable space to circle words. A quick sample is especially helpful when using a printer or paper size you have not tried before.

Save a PDF for another day

Open the browser’s print dialog and look for Save as PDF, or a PDF option in the destination or printer menu. Keep the same paper size, portrait orientation, and 100% scale you would use for a physical print. Check whether the answer page is included before saving.

Give the file a descriptive name with the theme, difficulty, and paper size. Open the saved PDF once to confirm that the grid, word list, and any answer page are present. You can then print it later or share it with the person preparing your activity copies.
